As an accredited HMC appraiser, I first work with heads and their chairs of governors to be clear about the ownership, purpose and method of an external appraisal so we are all sure what we are trying to achieve and for what purpose.

"I have learnt a great deal during this process, and it has exposed some issues which needed to be addressed and which would not have been but for your insights and keen eye. It has been a great pleasure working with you. You have rendered a great service to our headmaster and, ultimately, to the school and its pupils."

Chair of Governors, Trinity School, Croydon

The HMC appraisal framework provides an excellent structure for this. It allows information to be gathered from the many stakeholders invested in and served by the head of an independent school. Online, confidential questionnaires and follow-up interviews enable me, as an appraiser, to form a picture of how a head is leading and managing their school; their direct and indirect impact on the wide range of activity in which a modern independent school is involved; their relationships with key individuals and groups. And I am able to work with the head to compare this picture with their own picture, through self-appraisal.

"Simon approached the appraisal process with great empathy and sensitivity, establishing an appropriate balance between rigorous, objective data-gathering and a deeply human understanding of the challenges of headship. This ensured the process was conducted in an atmosphere of trust and confidence, with the Head fully engaged and active throughout. Thanks to Simon’s personal qualities and the highly effective manner in which he set about his work, I am confident that this appraisal will have a deep and lasting impact."

The process provides evidence-based affirmation. It flags areas of excellence. It explores areas where a head’s self-appraisal may be out of kilter with the feedback from others. We identify behaviours that need to change and devise means for achieving this. We make a plan that addresses their training, mentoring, coaching and welfare needs. We take this plan to the chair of governors and it informs that relationship.

"Simon's dealings, with parents, staff, academic staff at all levels and support staff, together with his liaison with governors, were exemplary. He dealt with all individuals and issues sensitively both during and post appraisal. The detailed analysis of the staff, parent and governor surveys reflected responses which would contribute to our way forward. His guidance for the future was borne out by his experience. I have no hesitation in recommending him."

Diane M. Huntingford, Former Chair of Governors, Somerhill

I benefited from several sensitive, astute, wise, measured appraisers – and my common room, governors and school did, too. I have been told I have done the same for others, and I believe I can bring a great deal to the right head in the right frame of mind who is backed by the right governors.

"Simon’s deep understanding of independent schools is fundamental to his success in carrying out Professional Reviews and Appraisals. He inspires confidence and is able to identify issues with clarity and understanding. Everyone benefits from the experience. Highly recommended."

Kevin Riley, Chair of Governors, QEH, Bristol

It is a powerful process when used properly by those open to investing properly in their own development and welfare for the benefit of their schools as well as for themselves.
